Every streaming viewer does it multiple times a session: they hit pause. To grab a drink, answer the door, check their phone, etc. For years, that moment was dead air, a frozen frame nobody monetized. Not anymore.
Pause ads are quickly becoming one of the best-performing formats in CTV, and the numbers back it up. Independent research puts average viewability at 100%, with viewers keeping their stream paused for roughly 24 seconds on average, some for minutes. Aided brand recall runs around 91%, message recall close to 98%, and roughly half of viewers take some kind of action after seeing one. Compare that to a skippable pre-roll competing for a few seconds of divided attention, and it's easy to see why buyers are paying attention.
Two things have kept pause ads from scaling until now. First, there was no standard, as every publisher built it differently, which made it hard to buy consistently or at scale. That's changing fast: IAB Tech Lab has been formalizing specs for pause ads as part of its broader CTV ad format standardization work, and its second round of public comment on the updated guidelines closed last week, with pause ads named as one of the recommended, standardized formats to come out of that process. That's the industry telling buyers this format is graduating from experiment to expectation.
Second, and this is the part most of the industry hasn't solved yet, pause ads have needed dedicated creative. Producing a new asset for a format that, until recently, couldn't even be bought programmatically has been a hard sell for a lot of brand teams.
That's the problem Spaceback solves.
Spaceback's platform takes the content a brand is already publishing, social media posts, and converts it directly into a pause ad, with no additional production cost or timeline. If your team is already posting on social platforms like Instagram or TikTok, you already have creative that's ready to run on the largest screen in the house. No new shoot, new budget cycle, or waiting on a creative team that's already stretched thin.
Here's the part that makes this an easy first step: buying a pause ad looks a lot like buying display. It's a PMP, Deal ID-driven transaction, activated on the DSP you already use. This is not a brand new, unfamiliar workflow bolted onto your existing stack. If your team already buys display programmatically, you already know how to buy a pause ad.
And the supply side has caught up. Programmatic pause ad inventory is now live through partners including The Trade Desk and Roku, with more supply partners coming online as adoption grows. It's not "buy it everywhere" yet, and not every publisher supports it, but it's no longer a "coming soon." The brands activating now, are the ones building a head start while the rest of the industry catches up.
Pause ads are the ad format viewers don't mind seeing. Social content is the creative that brands have already made. Spaceback connects the two, using buying mechanics your team already knows. Why not make every impression a Spaceback impression?
